Bossard offers standard operating procedures such as tensile and compression tests to test the strength of metallic and composite materials. By performing these tests, we determine your materials’ or products’ yield strength, tensile strength, elongation at break and other mechanical properties. Materials testing by our test laboratories provides exact measurements for quality assurance in development, production and use.
Tensile strength and compression testing
How does a tensile strength test work?
Bossard has several testing facilities at its disposal to determine a material’s tensile strength. For example, tensile tests with a maximum of 600 kN can be performed for bolts and nuts from M3 to M33. During this process, your sample is stretched, shock-free, until it breaks or reaches a certain limit. The force (F) and the change in length are continuously measured on the sample and recorded during the test, allowing us to determine the load at which the sample begins to permanently deform – where the yield limit lies – and the load at which the material breaks – where the breaking load lies.
The compressive strength test – the reverse of the tensile test
Taking the direction of force into consideration, the compression test is the reverse of the tensile test. A compressive strength test provides information about a material’s behavior under uniaxial compression.
Tensile test and compression test in the Bossard test laboratory
As experts in fastening and materials technology, we perform all the tensile and compressive strength tests required for your quality assurance operations in our test laboratories. We use our state-of-the-art material testing machines and up-to-date testing software to determine your material’s strength behavior and advise you on how you can optimize it, taking manufacturing parameters and intended use into account.
